Marijuana Security

marijuana-industry-securitySecurity Measures for Marijuana Dispensaries

In 2018, Canada became the first G7 nation to legalize a nationwide marijuana market. Only one nation, Uruguay, had previously legalized the production, sale, and consumption of cannabis in 2013.

In the U.S., 11states and the District of Columbia allow for recreational marijuana use and 30 states OK the drug for medical purposes. It remains an illegal substance at the Federal level.

Legalization is creating billion-dollar industries, with Canada’s new cannabis industry estimated to be worth $5 billion by 2021.

With the growth of the new industry comes security concerns for safeguarding production facilities, product dispensaries, cash, and personnel.

Integrated Security Measures

Like any business with high-value product, from jewelry stores to pharmacies, facilities in the marijuana industry require a variety of integrated security measures, including:

  • CCTV Video surveillance of storage and dispensary areas.
  • Security Personnel. With the history of the cannabis industry in mind, security personnel employed in public view should be plain clothes and appear to be part of a friendly and welcoming staff operation.
  • Secure Transportation. Marijuana is an attractive target for retail crime, and the transportation of harvested materials and processed product can be tempting targets. Transportation services with experienced personnel, armored vehicles, and GPS tracking are recommended.
  • On-Site Anti-Theft Measures. Facility security has many facets on its own, starting with thorough background checks for employees, good inventory management, and physical protections, like vaults and secure wire storage cages and partitions.

Vaults and Security Caging

Retail and cultivation companies in the cannabis industry often require wire caging and vault solutions for their operations. Placing partitions within vault systems will divide a vault into sections, allowing for the organized secure storage of multiple classifications of merchandise. Alternatively, security caging is installed around the exterior of a vault, acting as a barrier to entry before reaching a specially designed modular vault.

Installing these two types of systems to work in conjunction with each other cannot only increase secure storage, but also organization of a cannabis business.

Wire mesh partitions and storage cages also allow for existing lighting, heating, and fire safety systems to operate without special accommodation.
